July/August 2026 extracts have been retracted

Due to a major bug in the new media wiki dumps infrastructure, the July and August 2026 dumps were incomplete, leading to many missing pages, despite attempts to mitigate the bug. This led to extracts with missing Lexical Entries, especially in very active Wiktionaries (mainly English and French ones). Hence these extracts are not on par with our quality exigence. We decided to simply retract them. You will not be able to download them and if you did, please use another version. The live dbnary version will be updated with the September 2026 version as soon as it is complete.

Eager to meet the Exolexica ?

Since its beginning, the DBnary dataset made the choice to extract what I call the endolexicon, i.e. the language data corresponding to the extracted language edition (e.g. French data is extracted from French language Edition). Since its 20220120 edition, DBnary now make available the exolexicon, i.e. all non French language data that is described in French language Edition. As the dataset is extracted for 22 different language editions, this accounts from thousands of different languages, now available from the dumps (Turtle format), from the HDT binary DB files (directly pluggable into your own Jena instance) and from Dbnary SPARQL endpoint (/sparql).

DBnary dataset is now made available in HDT

Warning HDT support has been dropped: combined HDT files are no longer produced. Use the Turtle dumps described on the Dataset page or the online access. You can now directly download an HDT* version of a whole language edition dataset (i.e. core, statistics, lime, enhanced translations, morphology and etymology (when available)). Everything is combined in one HDT file that is directly usable.

A new dashboard will give you latest statistics on DBnary dataset

Since 2020, the statistics on DBnary datasets were provided in RDF using the datacube vocabulary. As a result, the graphs available on this site were inaccurate (as they displayed previous, older, stats). We have built a new dashboard wordpress plugin (which is still in early alpha stage, yet may be useful). It is available under the new “Dashboard” page. Fill free to file many bug reports as we are still in early alpha stage for this dashboard.

Pre 2017 extracts are now available on Zenodo only

The DBnary project extracts every Wiktionary dumps since mid 2012 (for the earliest extracted language) until now. In July 2017, the extracts were transitioned from original lemon model to the now de facto standard ontolex model. As we are lacking resources to keep all historical dumps on this server, we decided to create archives of the older “lemon modeled” extracts and publish them on Zenodo, should anybody be willing to study the evolution of DBnary/Wiktionaries in this period.

Disambiguated Translation are now systematically computed

After a long wait, I finally managed to integrate the “Source Translation Disambiguation” experiment into DBnary extractor. Hence the sources of some translation are disambiguated each time a new dump is extracted. What is this ? In wiktionary, translations are sometimes included in a box which corresponds to a word sense. It allows for distinguishing between different translations. For instance, the French noun “bleu” may be translated in “blue” when it means a color, in “bruise” when it is used in the “small injury” acception and “rookie” when it designs a non experimented soldier.

DBnary is now using w3c Ontolex format

The DBnary data is now available using the ontolex vocabulary. New bugfixes and additional extracted data will now be available only using ontolex vocabulary. Of course, as usual, preceding extracted data is still available in lemon format. For a limited amount of time, the data will be extracted in both lemon and ontolex format. The online access will only be available in ontoloex format. The DBnary specific vocabulary will be shortly adapted for this new base vocabulary. Say tuned for more information.

Dbnary is offering a new dataset for African languages

We just took a first step towards expanding the DBnary dataset with dictionaries provided by the DILAF project. We have extracted a LEMON version of the DILAF Bambara dictionary and we give it available on the DBnary server. As usual, it is in lemon model, and URIs are dereferencable. Check for instance the /dilaf/bam/daɲɛgafe1__n entry.

Several statistics available

Statistics are available in the “Dataset” page. They are currently displaying the number of elements, lexical relations and Translations from/to the extracted languages. These stats are updated daily to reflect new extracted dumps. More to come…
