Le roseau est beaucoup beaucoup plus répandu que la paille en tant que matériau pour les toits de chaume, et reste utilisé encore aujourd’hui dans de nombreux pays d’Europe. Comme le roseau est nettement plus résistant que la paille, il est préféré comme matériau de couverture. Schilfdächer sind weit mehr verbreitet als Strohdächer und werden auch heute noch in vielen Ländern Europas erstellt. Da Schilf wesentlich widerstandsfähiger ist als Stroh, wird es als Deckmaterial bevorzugt.
